As a delivery captain that has taken hundreds of trips in many different bodies of water, I found this particular trip of interest and thought I’d write up a quick article.
Any time you’re moving a 113′ yacht from one place to another, it requires an extreme amount of planning.
Considering the New World Explorer has been on anchor in Jupiter for the past few years, the first task was to figure our what to do with the massive anchors.
Since the cable has been sitting in water for the past 2 years, we were sure they would part when we tried to haul the anchor…sure enough when trying to pull the first anchor, the cable parted.
After attaching a new cable to one of the anchors, we figured we try the second and just leave it with a float until we made the return trip…sure enough, the second cable broke too!
Anyway, the trip out of the ICW (Intracoastal Waterway) was uneventful as we requested bridge openings from the 2 Jupiter bridges and the Hobe Sound bridge. Surprisingly, we fit under the Indiantown Bridge by about 1′. The bridge tender was nice enough to help check and was on the ready to open the bridge if needed.
Continuing up the St. Lucie River and following the ICW West across the state of Florida, we past the Stuart train bridge and the Old Roosevelt bridge in Stuart, FL.
At this point we stayed to our left and followed the South Fork of the St. Lucie River towards the St. Lucie Locks.
As we approached the locks and handed them our lines, we were required to don our life preservers as directed by the lockmaster.
After a short time the opened the upriver lock and let the water flow. Once at capacity, the locks were opened completely and we were off to finish our trip.
All in all a great trip with an awesome crew!
